Your Holiday |

Meticulous
planning & judgment of our staff, holds the key for a good
holiday. We, keeping in view the peculiarities of the Indian sub-continent,
have compiled the following travel advice. However, sometimes
even the best-planned itinerary can run into minor problems. Our
ground staff is always at hand to work out the problem. We do
request that you have a patient & broadminded approach to
travelling in India.

| |
| Internal
Flights |
| We
use Jet Airways, Sahara or the Indian Airlines, whose fleets of
aircraft feature Boeing, Airbuses & ATR's. These airlines are
fairly punctual. But sometimes delays & cancellations take place
due to conditions beyond control. Under such circumstances, the
airlines make appropriate arrangements & it is their discretion,
but Legends & Palaces will endeavor to help in any way we can
& ensure the arrangements are done smoothly. Many flights in
India are 'hopping' flights, which stop at various cities before
landing. If you happen to board such a flight midway, there will
be no allocation of seats & the flight will be on free seating
bases. When departing from India, at any of the international airports,
it is mandatory to check in at least 3 hours before departure. This
is due to heavy traffic & security checks. |
| |
| Road Travel |
| Driving on
Indian roads can seem to be miraculous. All our drivers are however
very experienced, carefully trained. Unfortunately roads in India
bear little resemblance to the ones in Europe, being quite often
bumpy, narrow & pot-holed. Livestock is often seen on roads.
Most cars used will be Ambassadors, made in India, under license
from old Morris Oxford. Toyota Qualis are also the new generation
cars, with air-condition, we use for our customers. Both of these
vehicles are quite comfortable. |
| |
| Train Travel |
| It is very
exciting to travel by trains in India & sometimes more rewarding
then flying. There are some good, fast express trains running between
various cities. But again such trains are very basic & visibility
from the windows quite restricted. Where possible, we always try
to book first class air-conditioned, for our customers. Please note
such bookings are done 60-days from the date of journey. Therefore,
you are requested to book your travel accordingly. |

| Accommodation |
Standards
of accommodation vary dramatically & cannot be compared to the
west. In bigger cities like Delhi, Jaipur, Udaipur etc. the hotels
are quite modern & provide excellent facilities. In Rajasthan
the hotels are often private properties & colonial palaces,
retaining much of their original ambience. They may not have very
modern facilities but recompense with their charm & old worldliness.
These hotels are unique to India. Service can also be a bit slow
but never wanting in courtesy.
The system of check in & check out works on mid-day to mid-day.
The accommodation available in Game-parks like the Corbett, are
essentially basic, as it is far removed from civilization. Bur the
experience of wild life, out weighs the inconvenience of accommodation. |
| |
| Single supplements |
| Generally in
India, double & single rooms carry same tariff. In addition,
in the peak season, it is sometimes difficult to get single accommodation.
So kindly get in touch with Legends & Palaces, on this issue
before hand. |
| |
| Food |
| In main city
hotels, there is normally a good selection of restaurants, offering
a wide variety of Indian, European & Oriental cuisine. But in
some palace hotels, there may be only a selection of Indian dishes.
The hotels are keenly aware of the European standards of hygiene
& take great care in dishing out good food. While health problems
can occur, but these are minor stomach upsets, due to spicy food
or over-consumption of delightful dishes. The doctors are available
at all hotels. Our representatives are also at hand to suggest &
obtain medical assistance. |
| |
| Money &
Credit Cards |
| You
are advised to carry your money in the form of Traveller Cheque.
These are easily exchanged in minor hotels & banks. Please note
that you keep evidence of your travel Cheque exchanged, with yourself,
as it is needed to convert Indian currency to your own, at time
of departure. Also after checking in & passing immigration at
time of your departure from India, you will not be able to use Indian
currency. Most hotels, restaurants & shops accept major visa
& master cards. But in remote off-beaten tracks you may not
be able to use credit cards. So you are advised to exchange some
money before reaching such destinations. |
| |
| Shopping |
| There are many
wonderful handicrafts purchasable in India, but we strongly recommend
that you take precautions. Always check on the levels of import
duty levied for items that you wish to buy. Shopkeepers suggest
that no duties are levied on such items that you purchase &
take home. This may not be true. You must bargain, as this is a
way of life in India. While buying expensive items like jewellery,
carpets & antiques, expert knowledge is necessary to ascertain
the exact value. Some shops will give you certificates of authenticity.
Such certificates carry no value abroad. Legends & Palaces will
not be held responsible for such shopping. |
| |
| Poverty |
| It is an inescapable
fact that destinations featured on our website, may have areas of
extreme visible poverty. India does have a large number of beggars,
in part because many Indians give alms to them for religious reasons.
Those found at hotels & tourist monuments are mostly professional
beggars & we request you not to give them alms. Do not be afraid
to refuse any gifts for which you are later expected to pay. We
can advise on a few charities in India, if you wish to help. |
| |
| Security |
| Although there
can be crimes leveled against tourists in the destinations featured
on our website, these tend to be no more prevalent than in many
other parts of the world. An awareness of the following will lessen
the risk to you & your belongings. |
| |
| Valuables |
| Take the absolute
minimum. A camera is a necessity but if you can keep it in your
pocket nothing like it. It is not a good idea to take valuable jewellery
or a visible wrist watch. Money should be taken in the form of travelers
Cheque & the numbers noted somewhere separately, incase these
are lost or stolen. Currency cash should be minimal & just enough
to meet your daily needs. You may keep your valuables in your hotel
safe deposit box, wherever possible. If you are carrying a bag,
it should be held in front of you so that it is not opened stealthily.
|
| |
| Airports
& railway stations |
|
These are
the places where thieves normally operate. The modus operandi
is to distract your attention. So pay no attention to things lying
on the ground or get friendly with strangers. Do not leave your
luggage with any stranger, even for a minute.
